💡 LED lighting

LED lighting from China

LED is a deceptively simple product: two thirds of the cost sits in the driver and in the thermal management, and those are exactly the two parts that get cut when the price is pushed down.

Respuesta rápida

How do I buy LED lighting in China without it failing after six months?

LED lighting is bought in China, and most specifically in the Zhongshan cluster and in Shenzhen for smart products and drivers. What decides whether the product lasts is the driver and the thermal management, not the LED chip: a fixture with good LEDs and a cheap driver fails within a year. Inspection therefore has to measure operating temperature and driver behaviour under load, and not limit itself to checking that the light switches on.

The driver is the product

In an LED fixture, the component that fails most often is not the LED: it is the power supply. A quality driver costs a fraction of the final price, and it is the first thing that gets cut when a manufacturer wants to win a tender on price. The result is a product that works perfectly for three months and then starts flickering or switching itself off by the sixth.

The check is concrete: identify the make and model of the driver, verify that its rated power matches the real load with margin, and measure the temperature it reaches in continuous operation. A driver running at the limit of its capacity degrades quickly; one running with 70% margin lasts for years.

Thermal management and actual lumens

An LED does not burn out: it degrades. Every degree above its design temperature shortens its service life cumulatively. An undersized heat sink makes the product cheaper and multiplies returns at the two-year mark, right when you have already sold the whole batch.

On top of this comes the difference between nominal lumens and actual lumens. Standard practice is to state the chip's performance under laboratory conditions, not that of the finished, assembled product. We measure the luminous flux of the finished product and check the actual colour temperature, because the same product can claim 4,000 K and deliver 5,500 K, which is a visible change once it is installed.

Smart products: where Shenzhen's advantage lies

In conventional LED, the world centre is Guzhen, in Zhongshan, and there a Shenzhen agent has no geographical advantage. Where it does have one is in connected lighting: WiFi and Bluetooth controllers, radio modules, firmware and app. That is Shenzhen's ground, because it is the same ecosystem that makes the wireless modules and the boards.

If your product is going to carry connectivity, it makes sense to work from Shenzhen even if the final assembly is in Zhongshan. If it is a conventional fixture with no connectivity, we will tell you so and work with the Zhongshan cluster, which is where the factories and the prices are.

Certifications and applicable regulation

Every product category has its own regime. This table summarises what each standard requires and what it is for; which one applies to your specific product depends on its classification, and we confirm that before production.

Certifications and applicable regulation
Standard What it covers and why it matters
CE / LVD / EMC Electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility for the European market.
RoHS Restriction of hazardous substances in components and solder.
NOM (México) Technical regulation applicable to electrical and lighting products.
Inmetro (Brasil) Mandatory certification for luminaires and electrical material.
IP (ingress protection) Degree of protection for outdoor use. Verify that the certification is real and not just a label.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether an LED fixture's driver is good quality?

Whether an LED fixture's driver is good quality is judged by the make and model. Reputable driver manufacturers have an identifiable part number and a public datasheet with its degradation curve. If the supplier cannot tell you which driver the fixture uses, or answers with a generic brand and no part number, assume it is the first thing that was cut. The second check is to measure the driver's temperature after two hours of continuous operation.

Why do sections of my LED strip go dark?

Sections of an LED strip almost always go dark because of voltage drop. Long strips fed from one end only lose voltage along the track, so the LEDs in the final segment receive less voltage, run cooler and change colour or go dark. It is solved by feeding power from both ends or injecting current at intervals. This is a design problem, not a problem with the quality of the LED.

What IP rating do I need for outdoor use?

For outdoor LED lighting, IP65 is the minimum for exposure to rain, IP67 for temporary immersion and IP68 for continuous immersion. The frequent error is a product that claims IP65 while its connector or gasket does not meet that rating, so the real protection is far lower than the declared one. Inspection therefore checks the gasket and the cable gland, not the label.

Should LED lighting be manufactured in Shenzhen or in Zhongshan?

Whether LED lighting should be manufactured in Shenzhen or in Zhongshan depends on whether it carries connectivity. For conventional lighting, the Guzhen cluster in Zhongshan is the world centre of production and has the best prices; we work there without any problem. For smart lighting with WiFi, Bluetooth or app control, Shenzhen has the advantage because it shares an ecosystem with the manufacturers of wireless modules and boards.
