Consumer electronics from Shenzhen

Shenzhen is not where electronics are sold: it is where they are made. We work the seven categories where that difference turns into real price, lead time and quality control.

Short answer

What does buying electronics through an agent in Shenzhen mean?

Buying electronics through an agent in Shenzhen means working directly with the factories of the Pearl River Delta instead of with intermediaries, verifying the plant before you pay, inspecting production before shipment, and settling the destination market's mandatory certifications before the goods leave China. MeliPrep operates from Shenzhen and covers seven verticals: phone accessories and 3C, audio, LED lighting, batteries and chargers, wearables, components and board assembly, and small electrical appliances.

Why certification is settled before production

In electronics the bottleneck is almost never production: it is certification. Testing is carried out on the finished product, so it can only begin once a manufactured unit exists. If a project does not plan for that, the certificate becomes the delay for the entire launch and the goods wait in the factory.

That is why we review the applicable regime during design. Changing a material, a radio module or a power supply before manufacturing costs one conversation. Changing it after the laboratory rejects the test costs an entire batch.

Where each thing is made in China

Being honest about this is more useful than pretending that Shenzhen wins at everything. Each category has its cluster, and we work whichever one applies.

Production clusters by category
  Category Main cluster Shenzhen advantage
Phone accessories and 3C Shenzhen (Bao'an, Longgang) and DongguanTotal: it is the world centre for the category
Audio (TWS and speakers) Shenzhen and DongguanTotal: the largest concentration of manufacturers
Conventional LED lighting Guzhen, ZhongshanPartial: only if it carries connectivity
Smart lighting and drivers ShenzhenTotal: it shares an ecosystem with wireless modules
Batteries and power banks Shenzhen, Dongguan and HuizhouHigh: cells, BMS and assembly nearby
Wearables ShenzhenTotal: sensors, modules and assembly
Components and PCBA Shenzhen (Huaqiangbei and Bao'an contractors)Total: the deepest component market in the world
Small electrical appliances Shunde, Zhongshan, Ningbo and YueqingLow: an advantage of control, not geography
For the categories where Shenzhen adds no advantage, we say so and source from the correct cluster.

Frequently asked questions about sourcing electronics in China

Why buy electronics in Shenzhen and not in another city in China?

Shenzhen is not an electronics trading hub: it is where the goods are manufactured. Shenzhen holds the Huaqiangbei component market, the world's largest concentration of factories for phone accessories, audio, LED lighting, batteries and connected products, and the ports of Yantian and Shekou. That means the supplier you talk to is usually the one who controls the production line, and that we can visit the plant before you pay.

Which categories of electronic products do you source?

MeliPrep works seven verticals: phone accessories and 3C, audio (earbuds and speakers), LED lighting, batteries and chargers, wearables and connected devices, components and board assembly, and small electrical appliances. When a product fits none of them, or when the right cluster sits outside Guangdong, we say so and work the route that applies.

Can I import electronic products without certification?

Certification requirements depend on the category. A passive low-voltage accessory has limited requirements; any product with a lithium battery, a wireless function or a power supply falls into regulated categories and may require mandatory certification in the destination country, such as NOM in Mexico or Inmetro and ANATEL in Brazil. Transporting lithium also always requires the UN38.3 report and the safety data sheet, independently of product certification.

What is the minimum order quantity for electronics from China?

The minimum order quantity varies widely by category. In phone accessories the minimum is usually between 100 and 500 units per reference and drops if you accept neutral packaging. In TWS earbuds, batteries and electrical appliances the usual minimum is 500 to 2,000 units, because there is more tooling and more customised components. In components and board assembly we can work from prototype quantities.

How is the intellectual property of my product protected?

Intellectual property is protected with a non-disclosure agreement signed before drawings or specifications are shared, with mould ownership documented in your name where there is tooling, and by avoiding concentrating the whole project in a single supplier when the product is easy to copy. We are honest about the limit: in consumer electronics, a successful product gets copied sooner or later. Real protection sits in the brand, the distribution and the speed, not only in the contract.

Do you work with a product that already has my own brand and design?

Yes, that is the OEM and ODM development service. We can start from a product the factory has already developed and customise it with your brand and packaging, or develop from scratch with your own mould. In electronic products, development from scratch adds board design, firmware and certification, and changes the order of magnitude of the budget; it is worth estimating before you decide.
